Antonio Banderas

Antonio Banderas has built a career on movement between worlds: Spanish and English-language cinema, intimate drama and extravagant adventure, live theatre and animation. Born in Málaga on 10 August 1960, he initially wanted to become a professional footballer, but a broken foot at 15 redirected him toward the performing arts. After studying drama and working in theatre, he joined the Spanish National Theatre. His screen career took shape through Pedro Almodóvar, who cast him in Labyrinth of Passion in 1982. Further collaborations—including Matador, Law of Desire, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown and Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!—gave Banderas an international profile. These films established the combination that would run throughout his work: movie-star magnetism paired with a willingness to play characters who are volatile, vulnerable or difficult to pin down. Banderas entered American cinema while still speaking minimal English, learning his lines phonetically for The Mambo Kings. He soon reached wider audiences through Philadelphia, Interview with the Vampire, Desperado and Evita. The Mask of Zorro made especially good use of his physical confidence and playful charm, while the Spy Kids films introduced that energy to family audiences. His voice performance as Puss in Boots became another major strand of his career. Beginning with Shrek 2, Banderas turned the sword-wielding cat into an affectionate send-up of his own Zorro persona, later leading Puss in Boots and returning for Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. Theatre has remained central to Banderas. He made his Broadway debut in the 2003 revival of Nine, earning a Tony nomination and winning Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle awards. In 2019, he opened the Teatro del Soho CaixaBank in Málaga as a centre for performance, production and training. His reunion with Almodóvar produced some of his most searching later work. After The Skin I Live In, Banderas played an ageing filmmaker looking back on his life in Pain and Glory. The performance won him the Cannes Best Actor award and brought his first Academy Award nomination, showing how effectively he can turn familiar charisma inward.
