Anthony Quinn

Anthony Quinn brought a forceful physical presence to the screen, but sheer size and intensity were only part of what made him compelling. Born in Chihuahua City, Mexico, on April 21, 1915, the Mexican and American actor built a career that moved between Hollywood, European cinema, Broadway and television. He was also a painter, sculptor, writer, musician and director. Early Hollywood often confined Quinn to broadly drawn ethnic characters and villains. By 1947, he had already appeared in more than 50 films, playing everyone from Indigenous figures and Arab sheiks to Mafia dons and resistance fighters. His stage work offered another route forward: he replaced Marlon Brando as Stanley Kowalski in the Broadway production of A Streetcar Named Desire. Quinn’s performance opposite Brando in Elia Kazan’s Viva Zapata! changed his standing in Hollywood. Playing Eufemio Zapata earned him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, making him the first Mexican-American to win an Oscar. A second supporting-actor Oscar followed for his portrayal of Paul Gauguin in Lust for Life. Between those victories, he delivered a volatile performance in Federico Fellini’s La Strada, part of a period in which his work with European filmmakers established him as an international star. His weathered features and expansive style became especially well suited to men driven by appetite, conviction or survival. He played Auda abu Tayi in Lawrence of Arabia, an aging fighter in Requiem for a Heavyweight, the title character in Barabbas and the exuberant Alexis Zorba in Zorba the Greek. The latter brought him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, and he returned to the role in the stage musical Zorba in 1983. Quinn continued working across film and television in later decades, with roles in The Message, Lion of the Desert, Jungle Fever and A Walk in the Clouds. Across a remarkably wide range of parts, he remained an actor of movement and weight—equally capable of suggesting authority, volatility, humor and hard-earned weariness.
