Anthony Edwards

Anthony Edwards has built a career around a quality that is harder to manufacture than it looks: an immediate sense of decency, even when the person he is playing is nervous, pressured or caught far outside his comfort zone. Born in Santa Barbara, California, in 1962, Edwards studied theater at the University of Southern California and received a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in England. His early film work moved easily between comedy and drama, with appearances in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Revenge of the Nerds, Gotcha! and The Sure Thing. Widespread recognition arrived with Top Gun in 1986, where he played LTJG Nick "Goose" Bradshaw opposite Tom Cruise. Edwards gave the high-flying spectacle a warm, human center, making Goose's fate one of the film's defining emotional turns. The character later appeared through flashbacks in Top Gun: Maverick. Edwards followed that success with films including Miracle Mile, Downtown, Pet Sematary Two and The Client, but television provided his defining long-form role. As Dr. Mark Greene on ER, he became a central presence from the 1994 premiere through the end of the eighth season in 2002. His performance earned four Primetime Emmy nominations and a Golden Globe, while the series also gave him his first opportunity to direct. His interest in directing ultimately contributed to his decision to leave the show, though he returned for a flashback appearance during its final season. After ER, Edwards took time to raise his children before continuing with roles in Thunderbirds, The Forgotten and Zodiac. Later television work included Designated Survivor and Inventing Anna. His career has also expanded into producing, directing and voice acting, alongside stage appearances that include Broadway productions of Children of a Lesser God, Girl from the North Country and Prayer for the French Republic. Across those different forms, Edwards remains especially effective at finding the ordinary, recognizably human rhythm inside heightened stories.
