Anthony Anderson

Anthony Anderson has built a career around range: broad comedy, grounded family sitcom work, crime drama, film supporting roles and the quick-thinking ease required of a television host. Born in Compton, California, on August 15, 1970, he found his way into performing with some early resistance from the audience. Anderson has described his first attempt at stand-up comedy as a failure, but fellow comedian Guy Torry encouraged him to keep taking the stage. The two later appeared together in Life in 1999. After attending the Hollywood High School Performing Arts Magnet, Anderson studied theater at Howard University before financial difficulties led him to leave after his junior year. Nearly three decades later, inspired by his son Nathan’s acceptance to Howard, he returned and completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2022. His early television work included the lead role of Teddy Broadis in Hang Time, along with guest appearances and recurring parts across sitcoms and dramas. Anderson made his film debut in Liberty Heights in 1999 and went on to move between leading comedies such as Kangaroo Jack, My Baby’s Daddy and King’s Ransom and supporting roles in Hustle & Flow, The Departed and the Scary Movie series. That mix established a useful screen persona: naturally funny, but sturdy enough for tougher dramatic material. Television ultimately gave Anderson his most sustained showcases. He played Detective Kevin Bernard on Law & Order for three seasons beginning in 2008, then returned when the series was revived in 2022. From 2014 to 2022, he starred as Andre “Dre” Johnson across all eight seasons of Black-ish. The role brought him 11 Primetime Emmy nominations and three Golden Globe nominations, while he also served as an executive producer on the spin-offs Grown-ish and Mixed-ish. Anderson’s career has continued beyond scripted acting. He hosted To Tell the Truth from 2016 to 2022, later co-hosted We Are Family with his mother, Doris Bowman, and hosted the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards. Across those different formats, his conversational comic timing remains the connecting thread.
