Annie Golden

Annie Golden has built the kind of career that makes tidy labels feel beside the point. Born in Brooklyn on October 19, 1951, she sang in school and church choirs before finding her way into New York music. She became the lead singer of The Shirts, a band that headlined CBGB in the late 1970s and recorded three albums for Capitol Records. That background gave Golden a screen and stage presence rooted in performance rather than polish: direct, expressive and always alive to the rhythm of a scene. Her move into film came while she was with The Shirts, when Miloš Forman cast her in Hair. The part connected naturally with a career that would repeatedly cross between music, theatre and acting. Golden has appeared in three versions of Hair: the 1977 Broadway revival, Forman’s 1979 film and a 2004 benefit concert. Her other Broadway work includes Leader of the Pack, Ah, Wilderness!, On the Town, The Full Monty, Violet and the 2022 production of Into the Woods. Golden’s film and television roles show a particular gift for making limited screen time count. She played a taxi driver opposite Bruce Willis and Madeleine Stowe in Terry Gilliam’s 12 Monkeys and voiced Marina in the animated feature The Pebble and the Penguin. She also appeared in Cheers, Miami Vice and I Love You Phillip Morris. For many viewers, Golden is best known as Norma Romano in Orange Is the New Black. Playing a nearly mute character, she relied on expression, timing and physical detail rather than dialogue. Golden shared a 2015 Screen Actors Guild Award with the show’s ensemble cast. Music has remained a constant alongside her acting. She performed in the duo Golden Carillo with Frank Carillo, returned to The Shirts, and has continued performing solo and with a band. Whether singing at CBGB, working on Broadway or quietly holding the frame on television, Golden brings the same sense of a performer fully engaged with the moment.
