Annette Bening

Annette Bening is an American actress whose work moves comfortably between stage, film and television. Born in Topeka, Kansas, on May 29, 1958, she began acting in junior high school and later studied drama at Patrick Henry High School. After attending San Diego Mesa College, she earned a degree in Theatre Arts from San Francisco State University and trained with the American Conservatory Theater. That stage background remains central to Bening’s appeal. She began her professional career with the Colorado Shakespeare Festival in 1980, later taking on roles including Lady Macbeth, and made her Broadway debut in Coastal Disturbances in 1987. Her performance earned a Tony Award nomination and a Theatre World Award. Even after establishing a substantial film career, she continued returning to demanding theatre roles, from Hedda Gabler and Medea to King Lear and a Broadway revival of All My Sons. Bening made her film debut in The Great Outdoors in 1988, but The Grifters gave her an early defining part. As con artist Myra Langtry, she brought calculation and danger to the neo-noir thriller, earning her first Academy Award nomination. Bugsy, The American President and Mars Attacks! demonstrated how naturally she could shift between drama, romance and broad comedy without flattening a character into a type. In American Beauty, Bening played Carolyn Burnham with a tightly controlled intensity that gradually exposed the character’s frustration and vulnerability. The performance won her a BAFTA and brought another Academy Award nomination. Being Julia and The Kids Are All Right later earned her Golden Globe wins, while 20th Century Women gave her another richly drawn role as a mother raising a teenage son. Her later work has remained notably varied. She portrayed Gloria Grahame in Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool, Senator Dianne Feinstein in The Report and Dr. Wendy Lawson in Captain Marvel. In Nyad, she played long-distance swimmer Diana Nyad opposite Jodie Foster, receiving her fifth Academy Award nomination.
