Anne Pitoniak

Anne Pitoniak (1922–2007) was an American actress whose career stretched comfortably across the stage, film and television. Born in Westfield, Massachusetts, on March 30, 1922, she graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Immediately after World War II, she spent two years touring Japan, the Philippines and Korea as a civilian actress with the Special Services—an early chapter in a working life defined by performance rather than celebrity. Theatre remained central to Pitoniak’s career. In Marsha Norman’s 'night, Mother, she played a mother desperately trying to talk her grown daughter out of suicide. The production premiered at the American Repertory Theatre in Cambridge before moving to Broadway, where Pitoniak and co-star Kathy Bates both received Tony Award nominations for Best Actress. Pitoniak earned a second Tony nomination in 1994 for playing Helen Potts in the Roundabout Theatre Company’s revival of Picnic. Her other Broadway appearances included Agnes of God, The Octette Bridge Club, Amy’s View, Uncle Vanya, Dance of Death and Imaginary Friends. She was also a regular presence at the Actors Theatre of Louisville for five years, performing in Norman’s Getting Out, D.L. Coburn’s The Gin Game and Jane Martin’s Middle Aged White Guys. Pitoniak brought that extensive stage experience to a steady run of screen work. Her films included The Survivors, Housekeeping, Hiding Out, The Wizard of Loneliness and Where the Money Is. In the 1985 film adaptation of Agnes of God, she played the mother of Jane Fonda’s character after having previously played Mother Miriam Ruth in the Broadway production—a neat example of how she could return to the same material from a different angle. On television, Pitoniak appeared as Mary in the Cheers episode “Pudd’n Head Boyd” and as Mrs. Berry in the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit episode “Redemption.” Across each medium, she built the kind of varied acting career that rewards a closer look.
