Anne Jackson built the kind of acting career that resists being confined to one medium. Born in Millvale, Pennsylvania, in 1925, she moved with her family to Brooklyn when she was eight. New York became the foundation of her working life: she trained at the Neighborhood Playhouse and the Actors Studio before making her Broadway debut in 1945. The stage remained a substantial part of Jackson’s career. Her theater credits included Summer and Smoke, Arms and the Man, Luv, The Waltz of the Toreadors, Lost in Yonkers and Mr. Peters’ Connections. That range was matched by steady work in film and television, where she moved between comedy, drama and the compact demands of episodic storytelling. Her film credits included The Tiger Makes Out, The Secret Life of an American Wife, How to Save a Marriage and Ruin Your Life, Lovers and Other Strangers, Dirty Dingus Magee and Folks! Rather than following a single kind of role, Jackson’s screen career was shaped by variety and an ability to work within very different ensembles. Television gave her an especially broad canvas. She appeared in early anthology programs including Armstrong Circle Theatre, The Philco Television Playhouse and Studio One, then continued across series such as The Untouchables, The Defenders, Gunsmoke, Marcus Welby, M.D., Rhoda, The Facts of Life and Highway to Heaven. Later appearances on Law & Order and ER extended that television career across several generations of American drama. She also narrated Stellaluna for an episode of Reading Rainbow. Jackson died in 2016, leaving behind a body of work that stretches from postwar Broadway to modern network television. Her archive, acquired by the Harry Ransom Center alongside her husband’s, opened for research in 2018—a fitting home for the record of an actor whose career was built through sustained, wide-ranging work.
