Anne Archer
Anne Archer has built a career across film, television and the stage, bringing a grounded, composed presence to dramas, thrillers and comedies alike. Born in Los Angeles on August 24, 1947, she is the daughter of actors John Archer and Marjorie Lord. After graduating from Pitzer College in 1968, she began her career with the “Ramona Pageant” in Hemet, California, before moving to New York City. Her early screen work included appearances on Hawaii Five-O, The Mod Squad, Ironside and Little House on the Prairie, along with a regular role in the 1973 sitcom Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice. Archer made her feature debut opposite James Coburn and Lois Nettleton in the 1972 comedy The Honkers. By the end of the decade, her film credits included Lifeguard, Good Guys Wear Black and Paradise Alley. The role most closely associated with Archer’s career is Beth Gallagher in the 1987 psychological thriller Fatal Attraction. Playing opposite Michael Douglas and Glenn Close, she gave the film an essential emotional center amid its escalating tension. The performance earned her Academy Award, BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations for Best Supporting Actress. Archer remained a strong presence in thrillers and ensemble pieces through the 1990s. She starred with Harrison Ford in Patriot Games and returned for its sequel, Clear and Present Danger. She also appeared in Robert Altman’s ensemble comedy-drama Short Cuts, as well as Narrow Margin, Eminent Domain and Body of Evidence. Later film roles included Rules of Engagement, The Art of War, Man of the House, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past and Lullaby. Her television work has ranged from Falcon Crest and The Family Tree to recurring roles on Boston Public, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Ghost Whisperer. On stage, she played Mrs. Robinson in a West End production of The Graduate and later portrayed Jane Fonda in The Trial of Jane Fonda. That movement between screen and theatre reflects the shape of Archer’s career: adaptable, substantial and never confined to a single kind of role.
