Annabeth Gish

Annabeth Gish has built the kind of career that rewards viewers who pay attention. Born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 1971 and raised in Cedar Falls, Iowa, she began taking substantial screen roles while still young, starring in the 1986 drama Desert Bloom before appearing opposite Jon Cryer in Hiding Out. Her early film work also included Shag and Mystic Pizza, where she played Kat, the sister of Julia Roberts’ character. Gish attended Duke University, concentrating on drama, film studies and women’s studies before graduating with a B.A. in 1993. Her subsequent roles showed how comfortably she could move between historical drama, political biography and contemporary character pieces. She played Urilla Sutherland in Wyatt Earp, Julie Nixon in Oliver Stone’s Nixon and Tracey in Beautiful Girls. Other film appearances included Steel, SLC Punk!, The Celestine Prophecy and the thriller Before I Wake. Television became an equally important part of her career. Gish joined The X-Files during its eighth season as Special Agent Monica Reyes, eventually becoming one of the show’s principal characters alongside Robert Patrick. She later returned to the role for the series revival. She also appeared on The West Wing as Elizabeth Bartlet Westin and held a lead role as Eileen Caffee in the Showtime drama Brotherhood, appearing in 29 of its 33 episodes. Her later television work continued to place her in stories shaped by secrets, uneasy loyalties and psychological tension. She played Charlotte Millwright in The Bridge, Lt. Althea Jarry in Sons of Anarchy and Jo Noonan in Stephen King’s Bag of Bones. Horror audiences may also know her as Mrs. Dudley in The Haunting of Hill House and from her subsequent appearance in Midnight Mass. Across film and television, Gish has made a specialty of grounded performances in stories where ordinary lives meet stranger, darker circumstances.
