Annabelle Gurwitch

Annabelle Gurwitch has made a career out of moving between acting, comedy, writing and producing without treating any of them as separate lanes. Born in Mobile, Alabama, in 1961, she spent her earliest years there before her family moved to Delaware and later Florida. Her professional foundation was theatre: she began acting Off-Broadway in New York and worked with companies and venues including Henry Street Settlement and The Public Theater. That stage experience carried into a screen career built on versatility. Gurwitch appeared in early television roles on Not Necessarily the News and The Guiding Light, followed by parts in The Equalizer, China Beach and Alien Nation. Later guest appearances ranged from Seinfeld and Boston Legal to Medium, The Cleaner and Dexter. She also co-wrote two episodes of ThunderCats, an early sign that her work would extend well beyond performing. For many viewers, Gurwitch is closely associated with Dinner and a Movie, the TBS series she originally hosted with Paul Gilmartin. She co-hosted the blend of feature-film viewing and cooking instruction from 1996 to 2002. Her film appearances include Pizza Man, Melvin Goes to Dinner and The Shaggy Dog. Gurwitch took a more personal and hands-on approach with the 2007 documentary Fired!, which she wrote, produced, directed and appeared in. Drawing on the experiences of 25 people who had lost jobs, the film combined interviews, sketches, comedy routines and material from the earlier stage production. It neatly reflects the shape of her wider career: performance used as a route into observation, humour and lived experience. Her theatre work has remained substantial, including the title role in Murray Mednick’s Joe and Betty, a performance named among The New York Times’ top ten theatre performances of 2002. Whether acting, hosting or building a project from page to stage and screen, Gurwitch brings together the instincts of a performer and writer.
