Anna Kournikova

Anna Kournikova’s story begins well outside the movies. Born in Moscow on 7 June 1981, she built her name as a Russian tennis player before also becoming associated with modeling. Her athletic path started early: she received her first racquet at five, joined Moscow’s Spartak Tennis Club and was competing in junior tournaments by eight. At ten, she moved to Bradenton, Florida, to train at Nick Bollettieri’s tennis academy. Kournikova reached the professional stage while still remarkably young. She made her WTA Tour debut at 14, represented Russia at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta and reached the Wimbledon singles semi-finals on her tournament debut in 1997. Her singles career included a final at the 1998 Miami Open and a career-high ranking of world No. 8, although a WTA singles title remained out of reach. Doubles provided the clearest measure of her success. Partnering Martina Hingis, Kournikova won the Australian Open women’s doubles title in 1999 and again in 2002. She reached world No. 1 in doubles, collected 16 doubles titles across her professional career and earned the 1999 WTA Doubles Team of the Year award with Hingis. She also reached mixed-doubles finals at Wimbledon and the US Open. Injuries increasingly shaped her later playing years, particularly problems with her foot and back. Her final WTA match came in 2003, though she later returned to the court for exhibitions, charity events and World Team Tennis. Modeling became another part of her public career, extending a profile already established through sport.
