Ann-Margret

Ann-Margret has always seemed most at home where acting, music and movement meet. Born Ann-Margret Olsson in Stockholm on 28 April 1941, she began taking dance lessons as a child and developed her performance instincts through amateur television appearances, theatre and live music. By 1961, she was recording for RCA Victor and making her film debut opposite Bette Davis in Frank Capra’s Pocketful of Miracles, a performance that earned her a Golden Globe for New Actress of the Year. Her early screen persona was powered by a rare combination of exuberance and control. Bye Bye Birdie made her a major star in 1963, while Viva Las Vegas paired her with Elvis Presley in a musical built to showcase energy, chemistry and movement. Ann-Margret could command a song-and-dance number, but her career became more interesting when films asked her to work beyond that glamorous image. Mike Nichols’s Carnal Knowledge brought an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress and a Golden Globe win. Four years later, her performance in the musical Tommy earned her a Best Actress Oscar nomination and another Golden Globe. Those roles helped establish the shape of her career: musical showmanship on one side, emotionally demanding dramatic work on the other. Ann-Margret continued moving between film, television, stage and recording rather than settling into a single lane. Her television performances in Who Will Love My Children? and A Streetcar Named Desire each brought Golden Globe wins, and she later received her first Emmy for a 2010 guest appearance on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. On film, she found a fresh comic chapter in Grumpy Old Men and Grumpier Old Men. Music has remained part of the story throughout. Decades after her first Grammy nomination in 1962, God Is Love: The Gospel Sessions earned another. In 2023, Born to Be Wild returned her to the album chart for the first time since 1964—a fitting reminder that Ann-Margret’s career has never depended on standing still.
