Ann Jillian’s career has moved across film, television, voice work and the stage, beginning when she was still a child. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on January 29, 1950, she grew up in a Lithuanian immigrant family and speaks Lithuanian fluently. Jillian made her film debut as Little Bo Peep in Disney’s Babes in Toyland in 1960. Two years later, she appeared as Dainty June alongside Rosalind Russell and Natalie Wood in the screen version of Gypsy. Her early television work included the role of mute telepath Ilse Nielsen in the 1963 Twilight Zone episode “Mute,” where she was credited as Ann Jilliann. She later became a regular on Hazel during its 1965–66 season. That early run did not lead to a simple transition into adult roles. After taking voice parts in Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! and Sealab 2020, Jillian found herself caught between age brackets: considered too old for youthful roles and too young to be a leading lady. She stepped away from Hollywood work, took a department store job and studied psychology, while continuing to follow advice from casting director Hoyt Bowers and Walt Disney to keep working at her craft. The stage gave her room to do exactly that. In the late 1970s, Jillian toured in musical comedies, including Sammy Cahn’s Words and Music, and starred in I Love My Wife at Chicago’s Drury Lane Theatre. After appearing with Mickey Rooney in Goodnight Ladies, she joined Rooney and Ann Miller in the original Broadway company of Sugar Babies in 1979. Jillian’s career is notable for that persistence and adaptability: a child performer who navigated an awkward professional gap by expanding into voice acting and live theatre. In 1983, the Young Artist Foundation recognized her work with its Former Child Star “Lifetime Achievement” Award.
