Ann Firbank

Ann Firbank is a British actress whose work stretches across film, television and the stage. Born in Secunderabad on 9 January 1933, she has built a career marked by literary adaptations, costume drama and performances spanning several decades. One of Firbank’s defining screen roles came in 1971, when she starred as Anne Elliot in ITV’s serial adaptation of Jane Austen’s Persuasion. It placed her at the centre of one of Austen’s most enduring stories and remains a notable part of her television work. Her film credits include Accident, released in 1967, The Scarlet Pimpernel in 1982 and Anna and the King in 1999. Firbank continued working in costume drama with a 2005 appearance in Elizabeth I alongside Dame Helen Mirren. That role joined a body of work with a clear affinity for period settings and established texts, from Austen to The Scarlet Pimpernel. Her stage career has remained active too. In 2012, Firbank appeared in a production of The Golden Dragon at the Jagriti Theatre in Bangalore, India. Reviewing the production, The Hindu described her as “energetic and youthful at 79” and said that she “stands out for her stage presence.” Two years later, she played Rebecca Nurse in The Crucible at the Old Vic. Taken together, these roles show an actress able to move between leading television work, supporting film appearances and demanding theatre productions. Firbank’s career is not contained by a single part, even if her Anne Elliot gives audiences a natural place to begin. It is a body of work shaped by longevity, classical material and a stage presence still drawing notice well into her later career.
