Ann Beach

Ann Beach brought sharp comic timing, a powerful singing voice and a strong sense of character to a career spanning theatre, television, film and radio. Born in Wolverhampton on 7 June 1938, she spent part of her childhood in Cardiff, where her early promise as a vocalist suggested a future in opera. Instead, she chose drama, winning a scholarship to RADA at 16 and graduating in 1957 with the Anmer Hall Memorial Prize. The stage remained central to Beach’s work. After making her professional debut in 1957, she joined Joan Littlewood’s Theatre Workshop at Stratford East, appearing in productions including Fings Ain’t Wot They Used T’Be and The Hostage. She also worked at the Royal Court, performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company and took prominent West End musical roles. As Agnes Gooch in Mame, opposite Ginger Rogers, she had a particularly good showcase for the operatic range she might once have pursued full-time. On television, Beach found roles that made the most of her lively, characterful presence. Her screen breakthrough came in 1961 as Brenda in the BBC sitcom The Rag Trade, part of its spirited garment-factory workforce. She later became closely associated with Sonia Barrett, the eccentric and inquisitive neighbour in Fresh Fields. Beach played Sonia from 1984 to 1986 and returned for the final episode of its sequel, French Fields, in 1991. Her feature-film appearances were less frequent but included Hotel Paradiso, the 1972 adaptation of Under Milk Wood and a brief role as William Thacker’s mother in Notting Hill. She also built an extensive radio career, appearing in BBC dramas and joining The Archers for a short run as Joyce Walters in 2012. In later years, Beach worked as a voice coach and taught drama at the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts. Across the different branches of her career, she remained a performer equally at home with comedy, music and the carefully observed supporting role. She died in 2017.
