Ania Pieroni

Ania Pieroni is an Italian actress and model whose compact film career left a distinct mark on Italian horror cinema. Born in Rome on 28 February 1957, she attended Catholic primary and secondary schools before graduating from high school in the city. At her father’s suggestion, she began studying political science with a diplomatic career in mind, but her professional path eventually took her toward film, television and fashion. Pieroni made her screen debut with a small part in Alberto Lattuada’s 1978 film Stay as You Are. Two years later, she entered Dario Argento’s stylised world of horror in Inferno, playing a mysterious music student. The role placed her within one of the director’s most visually elaborate films, and she worked with Argento again in Tenebrae in 1982, this time appearing as a shoplifter. Between those two Argento films came the part for which Pieroni is best known: Ann, the ill-fated babysitter in Lucio Fulci’s 1981 film The House by the Cemetery. Her appearances in Inferno, The House by the Cemetery and Tenebrae give her filmography a particular concentration, connecting her with two major directors working in Italian horror during the period. Pieroni’s final film was Fracchia contro Dracula, released in 1985. Although she later received an offer to return as Mater Lachrymarum in Argento’s 2007 film Mother of Tears, she declined. Her work also extended beyond acting and modelling into dressmaking and fashion design. From 1985 until 1991, she served as director of the local television station GBR. Pieroni’s acting career may have been relatively short, but its shape is unusually clear: a debut in the late 1970s, a run of memorable genre roles in the early 1980s, and a subsequent move into television leadership and fashion-related work.
