Angus MacInnes
Angus MacInnes was a Canadian actor whose sturdy, grounded screen presence made him a natural fit for soldiers, police officers, pilots and other men accustomed to pressure. Born in Windsor, Ontario, in 1947, he graduated from the University of Windsor’s drama program in 1971 before moving to England on a scholarship to the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. He was the first Canadian admitted to the school. After working in repertory theatre, MacInnes made his film debut in Norman Jewison’s Rollerball in 1975, playing the bodyguard of James Caan’s character. He later credited that positive experience—and the time he spent observing the mechanics of acting for the camera—with persuading him to pursue film work full-time. His best-known role arrived in 1977, when he played Rebel pilot Jon “Dutch” Vander, better known as Gold Leader, in Star Wars. MacInnes remained closely connected to the character and to Star Wars fans throughout his career, regularly attending conventions and fan events. Nearly four decades later, archive footage and newly recorded audio allowed him to reprise the role in Rogue One. MacInnes also appeared alongside Harrison Ford in Force 10 from Navarone, as a US Army officer, and Witness, as a corrupt police officer. His range of supporting work stretched across genres and decades: a gangster in Atlantic City, former hockey player Jean “Rosey” LaRose in Strange Brew, a detective in Hellbound: Hellraiser II, a Judge in Judge Dredd, a gateman in Eyes Wide Shut, Sarge in Hellboy, a police captain in The Black Dahlia and a Maersk Alabama crewman in Captain Phillips. On television, he appeared in the BBC Scotland soap River City as Sonny Munro. MacInnes, who died in 2024, built his career in British, Canadian and American productions from the 1970s into the 2010s. Gold Leader remained his defining part, but his wider filmography shows the dependable character actor behind the familiar flight helmet.
