Angelo Rossitto built one of those long, winding screen careers that quietly connects very different eras of movie history. Born Angelo Salvatore Rossitto in Omaha, Nebraska, on February 18, 1908, he had dwarfism and stood 2 feet 11 inches tall as an adult. His stature made him an immediately distinctive presence, but the durability of his career came from his ability to keep working across changing genres, formats and generations. Rossitto was 19 when actor John Barrymore discovered him and cast him in The Beloved Rogue in 1927. The film marked Rossitto’s screen debut, and he appeared in Old San Francisco later that same year. Beginning during the final stretch of the silent era, he continued acting as movies made the transition to sound. One of his best-known early roles came in Tod Browning’s Freaks, where he played Angeleno in 1932. He later appeared in the controversial Child Bride in 1938 and worked in several Poverty Row productions starring Bela Lugosi during and after the Second World War. Those credits placed him firmly within the stranger corners of American genre filmmaking, though his career was never confined to a single kind of picture. Across the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, Rossitto continued moving between film and television. His later credits included Alex in Wonderland, Brain of Blood, Dracula vs. Frankenstein, Little Cigars and Fairy Tales, alongside frequent television appearances that included the police drama Baretta. Rossitto was still taking on memorable screen work late in life. At 77, he played Master opposite Mel Gibson in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, a role that introduced his singular presence to another generation of moviegoers. He remained active until 1987. By then, his career had stretched across six decades and more than 70 films—a remarkable passage from silent cinema to a major 1980s production.
