Angelique Rockas

Angelique Rockas has built a career across stage, film and television, but theatre—and its ability to confront political and cultural tensions—has been central to her work. Born in Boksburg, South Africa, in 1951, she was raised by Greek parents and grew up within Greek Orthodox traditions. Her early activism, including opposition to apartheid and advocacy for women, eventually contributed to her decision to move to the United Kingdom. Rockas studied English literature and philosophy at the University of the Witwatersrand before completing an acting course at the University of Cape Town’s Drama School under Robert Mohr. In North London, she joined Theatro Technis, a Greek Cypriot company whose work brought classical drama and contemporary sociopolitical concerns together. She appeared in Greek productions, played Io in Prometheus Bound and performed under the name Angeliki in bilingual plays addressing the Greek Cypriot community and the Turkish invasion of Cyprus. Her performance as the lead in Euripides’ Medea at Theatro Technis in 1982 captured the force of her acting. Directed by George Eugeniou, the production presented Medea as a barefoot refugee, giving the tragedy an immediate sense of displacement and anger. Rockas also took on Lady Macbeth at the Tramshed Woolwich and played the Nurse in The F and H Play at Edinburgh’s Traverse Theatre. As founder and artistic director of Internationalist Theatre, Rockas pursued an explicitly international approach to performance. Between 1981 and 1985, her roles included Carmen in The Balcony, Yvette in Mother Courage and Her Children, Tatiana in Enemies and Emma, a concentration camp victim, in Griselda Gambaro’s anti-junta drama The Camp. She later played Miriam in the London premiere of Tennessee Williams’ In the Bar of a Tokyo Hotel and the title role in Strindberg’s Miss Julie, a piece of casting that deliberately pushed against conventional assumptions about who could embody an aristocratic character. Across those roles, Rockas’s career shows a consistent interest in difficult women, political theatre and stories shaped by exile, power and resistance.
