Angela Bassett

Angela Bassett brings a rare combination of authority, emotional precision and physical command to the screen. Born in New York City on August 16, 1958, she studied African American Studies at Yale University before earning an MFA from the Yale School of Drama. That grounding in history and theatre has remained visible throughout a career spanning film, television, stage, voice acting, directing and producing. Her early stage work included August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and Joe Turner’s Come and Gone at Yale Repertory Theatre. On film, Boyz n the Hood and Malcolm X brought wider attention, with Bassett playing Betty Shabazz in Spike Lee’s Malcolm X. Her performance as Tina Turner in What’s Love Got to Do with It confirmed her ability to portray a well-known figure without reducing her to an impersonation. The role earned Bassett a Golden Globe and an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. Bassett’s range across the 1990s was especially clear: the bruised anger of Bernadine Harris in Waiting to Exhale, the toughness of Mace Mason in Strange Days and the romantic confidence of Stella Payne in How Stella Got Her Groove Back. She later portrayed Rosa Parks in The Rosa Parks Story, earning a Primetime Emmy nomination, and took on further real-life roles including Coretta Scott King and Voletta Wallace. Television has given Bassett equally substantial territory. Her work across multiple seasons of American Horror Story included performances as Marie Laveau and Desiree Dupree, along with directing an episode of American Horror Story: Roanoke. Since 2018, she has played Athena Grant in 9-1-1 while also serving as an executive producer. As Queen Ramonda in Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Bassett found grandeur and grief inside the scale of a superhero story. Her performance in Wakanda Forever earned a Golden Globe, a Critics’ Choice Award and an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress—the first acting nomination for a performance in a Marvel Studios film. It was another reminder of what Bassett does so well: make strength feel specific, personal and fully lived.
