Andy Serkis

Andy Serkis has built a career around the idea that a performance can travel through almost any medium and still feel immediate. Born Andrew Clement Serkis in Ruislip Manor on 20 April 1964, the British actor studied visual arts and theatre at Lancaster University, where acting gradually took precedence over his original artistic interests. Early work at the Nuffield Studio and Duke’s Playhouse gave him experience both onstage and behind the scenes, laying the groundwork for a career spanning theatre, television, film, voice work, directing and producing. Serkis first reached a wide audience as Sméagol and Gollum in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Providing the character’s voice, facial expressions and motion-capture performance, he helped place CGI-assisted acting at the centre of a serious industry debate. It was not simply a technical achievement: the role depended on the same control of movement, rhythm and character that defined his stage work. He continued exploring performance capture as the title character in King Kong, Captain Haddock in The Adventures of Tintin and, most significantly, Caesar across Rise, Dawn and War for the Planet of the Apes. Each role demanded a different physical language, while his live-action work showed equal range. His parts include Ian Dury in Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll, Ulysses Klaue in Avengers: Age of Ultron and Black Panther, Alfred Pennyworth in The Batman, and the quietly commanding Kino Loy in Andor. He also played Supreme Leader Snoke across the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Serkis has increasingly moved behind the camera. After serving as second unit director on The Hobbit films, he made his feature directing debut with Breathe, then directed Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle and Venom: Let There Be Carnage. In 2011, he co-founded The Imaginarium with producer Jonathan Cavendish, connecting film and television production with a London-based performance-capture studio. Whether visible on screen or working through a digital character, Serkis approaches acting as a fully physical craft. His career has repeatedly crossed the supposed boundaries between theatre, live action, voice performance and technology—and made those boundaries seem far less important than the performance itself.
