Andy Dick

Andy Dick is an American comedian and actor whose screen career has moved between sketch comedy, sitcom ensembles, movie cameos, voice work and projects of his own making. Born on December 21, 1965, in Charleston, South Carolina, he lived in several places as a child before his family moved to Chicago in 1979. Theater became an early outlet: Dick appeared in numerous high-school productions, then joined Chicago’s Second City and studied improvisational comedy at iO Theater. That improv background carried naturally into television. Dick began his TV comedy career as a cast member on The Ben Stiller Show, but his best-known sustained sitcom role came as reporter Matthew Brock on NewsRadio from 1995 to 1999. He later played Owen Kronsky on Less than Perfect and developed The Andy Dick Show with colleagues and producers for MTV, where it ran for three seasons. The Assistant followed in 2004, using the reality-show format as material for satire. In movies, Dick has often been used as an eccentric supporting presence or a quick comic interruption. His credits include In the Army Now, Reality Bites, Bongwater, Inspector Gadget, Road Trip, Zoolander, Old School and Employee of the Month. He made his feature directing debut with Danny Roane: First Time Director in 2006, reflecting a career that has also included work as a writer, screenwriter and producer. His voice roles show another side of that comic range. Dick voiced Nuka in The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride, Boingo in Hoodwinked!, Mambo in Happily N’Ever After and characters in Clone High, Hey Arnold! and Dilbert. Whether working inside an ensemble or building a show around his own unpredictable persona, Dick’s career has remained rooted in the anything-can-happen instincts of live improvisation.
