Andrew Scott

Andrew Scott has built a career around characters whose composure never tells the whole story. Born in Dublin on 21 October 1976, he began acting young, taking weekend classes at Ann Kavanagh’s Young People’s Theatre before being chosen at 17 for a starring role in the Irish drama Korea. He briefly studied drama at Trinity College Dublin, then left to join the Abbey Theatre. By 22, he had moved to London. The stage has remained central to Scott’s work rather than running parallel to his screen career. Early recognition included an Olivier Award for A Girl in a Car with a Man, while later performances demonstrated the range of his theatrical instincts: the direct audience connection of Hamlet, the volatile celebrity at the centre of Birdland and the comic control of Present Laughter, which brought him another Olivier Award. He also took on every role in the one-man production Vanya, adapted from Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya. For television audiences, Scott’s defining breakthrough came as Jim Moriarty in Sherlock. Opposite Benedict Cumberbatch, he made the familiar villain unpredictable and unnervingly playful, winning the BAFTA Television Award for Best Supporting Actor. Fleabag found another use for his ability to mix charm, tension and vulnerability. As the Priest in its second series, he became central to the show’s emotional pull and won a Critics’ Choice Television Award. His film work has moved easily between large productions and intimate dramas. He appeared as Max Denbigh in Spectre, played a British Army officer in 1917 and starred opposite Paul Mescal in All of Us Strangers, earning a Golden Globe nomination for the latter. On television, Black Mirror gave him the tightly wound lead role in “Smithereens,” while Ripley placed him at the centre of Patricia Highsmith’s world as Tom Ripley, bringing Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. Across theatre, film and television, Scott is especially compelling when a role depends on contradiction: warmth beside danger, humour beside grief, confidence covering something far less settled.
