Andreas Katsulas

Andreas Katsulas built a career that moved freely between theatre, television and film, with a particular knack for characters who could command a scene from its edges. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1946 to a working-class Greek-American family, he earned a master’s degree in theatre from Indiana University Bloomington before beginning an acting life that ranged from South American barrios to Lincoln Center. Theatre remained a substantial part of that journey. From 1971 to 1986, Katsulas toured with Peter Brook’s International Theatre Company, performing both improvised and prepared work. That long stage background preceded many of the screen roles for which audiences came to know him. His television work included a 1981–82 run as Lucien Goff on the CBS daytime drama Guiding Light. He later became a regular on Babylon 5, playing Narn Ambassador G’Kar from 1994 to 1998. The role gave Katsulas room to sustain a character across several years rather than simply arrive, make an impression and disappear. He also entered the Star Trek universe as Romulan Commander Tomalak on Star Trek: The Next Generation. On film, Katsulas appeared in The Sicilian, Next of Kin, Someone to Watch Over Me, Sunset, Hot Shots! Part Deux and Executive Decision. His most pointed big-screen assignment came in The Fugitive (1993), where he played the one-armed villain Fredrick Sykes, a crucial figure in the mystery driving the film. Katsulas’s career was not confined to one format or one kind of production. Soap opera, science fiction, thrillers, comedy and extensive stage work all found a place in it. Across those settings, he was repeatedly trusted with figures of authority, menace or dramatic weight—a dependable presence whose work could sharpen the stakes around him. Katsulas died in 2006, leaving behind a screen career supported by unusually deep theatrical roots.
