Andrea Thompson
Andrea Thompson’s career has never stayed in one lane. Born January 6, 1960, in Dayton, Ohio, she moved with her family to Australia at six. After leaving high school at 16 and spending an extended period travelling, she settled in New York City, where she modelled and studied acting at the Strasberg Studio and the Herbert Berghof Studio under Uta Hagen. Thompson began professionally as a voiceover artist, work she has continued alongside her screen career. Her first significant film role came in Wall Street in 1987, followed by parts that moved easily between comedy, soap opera, science fiction and procedural drama. She played Genele Ericson during the final season of Falcon Crest, photojournalist Maggie Dawson in an episode of Quantum Leap and Nurse Helen Caldwell in the 1991 comedy Delirious. For science-fiction viewers, Thompson is closely associated with telepath Talia Winters on Babylon 5, a role she played through the middle of the show’s second season. She later joined JAG as Commander Alison Krennick before spending four seasons as Detective Jill Kirkendall on NYPD Blue. Those roles gave her a strong run playing capable, professionally driven characters in series built around pressure, hierarchy and difficult decisions. In 2000, Thompson left NYPD Blue to pursue journalism. She prepared for the change by earning her GED, working with veteran journalist Jack Hubbard and taking a writing seminar with reporter Wayne Freedman. After working as a general assignment reporter for KRQE in Albuquerque, she joined CNN Headline News as an evening anchor in 2001. She later worked with Court TV, introduced episodes of NYPD Blue and Forensic Files, narrated The System and began hosting Psychic Detectives in 2003. Her return to acting included a recurring role as Dr. Nicole Duncan on the third season of 24, followed by guest appearances on Bones and Criminal Minds. Taken together, Thompson’s work reflects an unusually varied professional route: voiceover, film, substantial television roles and a genuine move into broadcast journalism before returning to scripted drama.
