Andrea Marcovicci

Andrea Marcovicci has built a career in which acting and singing are not competing interests so much as two sides of the same performer. Born in Manhattan on November 18, 1948, she wanted to become a singer in her teens but majored in drama instead. After leaving school, she began finding her way into show business through singing appearances on The Mike Douglas Show and The Merv Griffin Show. Her acting career started with television commercials before she joined the soap opera Love Is a Many Splendored Thing as Dr. Betsy Chernak Taylor, a role she played from 1970 to 1973. Television remained a steady part of her work. She appeared in Smile Jenny, You're Dead, the second pilot film for Harry O, and later held a recurring role on Hill Street Blues. Her credits also include appearances on Kojak, The Incredible Hulk, Magnum, P.I., Taxi, Baretta, Mannix, Cybill and Arli$$, as well as a turn as Cleopatra on Voyagers! Marcovicci's film work includes The Front, The Concorde... Airport '79, Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone and Jack the Bear. Her performance in The Front brought her a 1977 Golden Globe nomination for New Star of the Year. She also worked on Broadway, appearing in Ambassador. Music, however, remained central to her career. Marcovicci became closely associated with the Oak Room at Manhattan's Algonquin Hotel, celebrating her 22nd season there in 2008 with Marcovicci Sings Movies II and her 25th in 2011 with No Strings. That show's closing performance became the Oak Room's final cabaret event. Her recording career includes As Time Goes By: The Best of Andrea Marcovicci, released by her own label as her 17th album or CD. Across film, television, theatre and cabaret, Marcovicci's career has been shaped by range, persistence and a clear attachment to the classic craft of performance.
