Amy Smart

Amy Smart’s screen career has moved easily between broad comedy, restless genre filmmaking and television drama. Born in Los Angeles on March 26, 1976, and raised in Topanga Canyon, Smart studied ballet for ten years before working as a model. While modeling in Milan, she met Ali Larter; after returning to Los Angeles, the two took acting classes together. Smart’s early screen work included the 1997 anthology film Campfire Tales and a minor role as a copilot in Paul Verhoeven’s Starship Troopers. She soon became a familiar presence in late-1990s and early-2000s film and television, appearing in Varsity Blues and Outside Providence while taking on the recurring role of Ruby in Felicity. Road Trip and Rat Race showed her place within the era’s ensemble comedies, while The Butterfly Effect gave her more dramatic material inside a dark science-fiction story. That balance between comedy and genre work continued throughout her career. Smart played Jamie “T.C.W.” Moyer in Scrubs and co-starred with Ryan Reynolds in the romantic comedy Just Friends. She also appeared in the action thriller Crank, returning for Crank: High Voltage, and took roles in Peaceful Warrior, the independent horror film Seventh Moon and Alexandre Aja’s supernatural thriller Mirrors. The projects varied widely, but Smart remained comfortable shifting from romantic comedy to heightened action and horror. Television has been an equally steady part of her work. She played a professional burglar in the CBS series Smith, recurred as Jasmine Hollander in Shameless and appeared in Maron. From 2020 to 2022, she played Barbara Whitmore in the superhero drama Stargirl. Across film and television, Smart’s career is defined less by one fixed screen persona than by her willingness to move between tones, formats and genres.
