Amy Madigan

Amy Madigan has built a career around characters who feel grounded, alert and fully engaged with the world around them. Born in Chicago on September 11, 1950, she performed in school plays before earning a B.A. from Marquette University. After moving to Los Angeles in 1974, she studied at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute and shifted from singing toward acting. Her screen career began with television work, followed by her film debut as Terry Jean Moore in Love Child. The performance brought a Golden Globe nomination for New Star of the Year, and Madigan quickly established herself across film and television. She played McCoy in the stylized rock-and-roll world of Streets of Fire, appeared as Viola Kelsey in Places in the Heart and earned Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for Twice in a Lifetime. Madigan’s range is especially clear in a run of late-1980s roles that moved between very different kinds of American movies. She played Annie Kinsella opposite Kevin Costner in Field of Dreams, then brought a sharper comic energy to Uncle Buck as Chanice Kobolowski. On television, her performance as Sarah Weddington in Roe vs. Wade won a Golden Globe and received a Primetime Emmy nomination. Her stage work has been equally substantial: she made her Broadway debut as Stella Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire and later appeared in productions including Buried Child in New York and London. That willingness to move between formats has continued throughout her career. Madigan portrayed Peggy Guggenheim in Pollock, appeared in HBO’s Carnivàle, played Bea McCready in Gone Baby Gone and took supporting roles in American Woman and Antlers. In 2025, she found a particularly striking late-career role as the eccentric, mysterious Gladys in Zach Cregger’s Weapons. The performance earned major supporting-actress honors, including an Academy Award, and demonstrated what Madigan has long brought to the screen: toughness, unpredictability and a sense that every character has a life extending beyond the frame.
