Amanda Boxer
British actor Amanda Boxer has worked across film, television and theatre, building a varied career around drama, comedy and stage performance. Born in London, she is the daughter of English scholar C. R. Boxer and American author Emily Hahn. On television, Boxer’s credits range from crime and mystery dramas to long-running medical series. She appeared in The Gentle Touch, Miss Marple’s Sleeping Murder, Between the Lines, Trial & Retribution and Casualty, as well as The Brothers and the historical drama The Cleopatras. Her comic work includes playing Amanda Trippley in both series of the BBC sitcom Chalk, a role that placed her within the show’s unruly school staff. In January 2020, she returned to BBC daytime drama with an appearance in Doctors as Elizabeth Pinfield. Her film work includes a role as Mrs. Ryan in Saving Private Ryan. Boxer also played the mother of Matt Smith’s character in the 2009 short film Together. Alongside those screen appearances, she has been part of Sense and Sensibility, adding another period production to a career that has moved comfortably between contemporary and historical settings. Theatre has been an equally important part of Boxer’s work. Her stage performances include The Last Days of Judas Iscariot at the Almeida Theatre, Cling to Me Like Ivy at Birmingham Repertory Theatre and The Painter at the Arcola Theatre. Taken together, these credits show an actor able to move between major ensemble pieces, television regularity and focused stage work without being confined to one kind of role. Boxer’s career is best understood through that range: familiar British television, substantial theatre productions and selective film appearances, each making use of her steady presence as a character actor.
