Alyssa Milano

Alyssa Milano has spent most of her life performing, but her career has never stayed in one lane for long. Born in the Bensonhurst neighborhood of Brooklyn on December 19, 1972, she began at seven in the national touring company of Annie, one of four girls selected from more than 1,500 who auditioned. Commercials and off-Broadway work followed before she made her film debut in the 1984 coming-of-age drama Old Enough. That same year, Milano began playing Samantha Micelli on Who’s the Boss?, the role that established her as a familiar television presence through eight seasons. She also entered the action-movie arena early, appearing opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger as his character’s daughter, Jenny Matrix, in Commando. Growing up on television brought recognition, but Milano was determined not to remain fixed in the image audiences had formed of her. The 1992 independent drama Where the Day Takes You and the television film Casualties of Love: The “Long Island Lolita” Story gave her opportunities to move toward more adult, challenging material. Television ultimately provided the clearest through-line in her career. After joining Melrose Place as Jennifer Mancini, Milano was cast as Phoebe Halliwell in Charmed in 1998. She remained with the fantasy series throughout its eight-season run and became a producer alongside Holly Marie Combs during season four. Phoebe’s combination of warmth, impulsiveness and determination suited Milano’s accessible screen presence while allowing her to move between comedy, romance and supernatural drama. Her later television work has included My Name Is Earl, Mistresses, Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later and Insatiable. Milano has also worked as a film and television producer, voice actor, singer and stage performer. It is a career shaped by early fame, deliberate reinvention and a lasting comfort with the rhythms of television—even when the roles themselves have moved from family sitcoms to prime-time drama, fantasy and comedy.
