Allen Garfield made a substantial career out of characters who rarely seemed entirely comfortable—or entirely trustworthy. Known for playing nervous villains, corrupt businessmen and politicians, he brought a valuable edge to American film and television: the sense that anxiety, ambition and self-interest might all be competing just beneath the surface. Born in Newark, New Jersey, on November 22, 1939, Garfield took an unconventional route toward acting. A 1957 graduate of Weequahic High School, he worked as a sports reporter and competed as a Golden Gloves boxer before turning to performance. He later attended The Actors Studio in New York City, where he studied with Lee Strasberg and Elia Kazan, and worked on stage before moving into film. That grounding supported a screen career spanning more than 100 film and television appearances. Garfield was often employed as a character actor, but his work was not confined to supporting roles or a single kind of production. His leading parts included Cry Uncle! in 1971, Skateboard with Leif Garrett in 1978 and Get Crazy in 1982. He also appeared in two art films directed by Wim Wenders, Der Stand der Dinge and Bis ans Ende der Welt, showing how comfortably his career could move between different corners of filmmaking. Television formed another part of that range, including an appearance in the 1988 Tales from the Darkside episode “The Deal.” An interesting connection to a later generation of filmmakers came through Quentin Tarantino, who studied with Garfield near the beginning of Tarantino’s acting career. Garfield, who died in 2020, left behind the kind of extensive body of work that rewards browsing rather than reducing to a handful of titles. Whether playing someone compromised, calculating or simply under pressure, he made unease feel like a character trait rather than a gimmick.
