Alison Steadman is a British actress whose career moves easily between stage, film, television and radio. Born in Liverpool on 26 August 1946, she trained at East 15 Acting School, where she met Mike Leigh during her second year. After leaving, she worked in regional repertory theatre, beginning at Lincoln in 1968 as Sandy in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. Her defining early role was Beverly in Mike Leigh’s Abigail’s Party. Steadman created the character on stage and reprised her performance when the original cast took the play to television. It remains a telling example of her ability to make an outsized personality feel sharply observed rather than merely exaggerated. Her stage career has ranged from Tartuffe and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof to Blithe Spirit and Thérèse Raquin. She won an Olivier Award for The Rise and Fall of Little Voice, adding another formidable character to a body of theatre work performed at venues including the Royal Court, the Old Vic, the Everyman Liverpool and the National Theatre. On film, Steadman has appeared in A Private Function, Clockwise, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, Shirley Valentine, Life Is Sweet, Topsy-Turvy, Confetti, Burn Burn Burn and 23 Walks. Her screen work is marked by a willingness to play comedy broadly when the part calls for it while keeping hold of the anxieties, affections and frustrations underneath. Television has given her some of her most widely recognised roles. She played Mrs Bennet in Pride and Prejudice, Betty in Fat Friends, Pauline Mole in Adrian Mole: The Cappuccino Years and Pam Shipman in Gavin & Stacey. Steadman returned as Pam for the programme’s 2019 and 2024 Christmas specials. Whether occupying the centre of a scene or unsettling it from the edges, she brings a performer’s eye for character and a comic rhythm shaped by decades across different forms.
