Alicia Witt

Alicia Witt has built the kind of career that refuses to stay in one lane. Born in Worcester, Massachusetts, in 1975, she was reading by four and first caught the attention of director David Lynch after a childhood television appearance in which she recited Shakespeare. Lynch cast her as Alia Atreides in Dune, beginning an association that would later include appearances in both the original Twin Peaks and its 2017 return. That unusual start established a pattern: Witt has long seemed at home in material with an offbeat edge. Her first film lead came in Fun, playing a disturbed teenager in a performance that received Special Jury Recognition at the Sundance Film Festival. A wider television audience came to know her as Zoey Woodbine on Cybill, while Urban Legend gave her a prominent place in late-1990s horror as final girl Natalie. Roles in Citizen Ruth, Mr. Holland’s Opus, Two Weeks Notice, The Upside of Anger and Last Holiday showed how easily she could move between sharp comedy, drama and studio filmmaking. Television has offered an equally varied set of parts. Witt played Detective Nola Falacci on Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Wendy Crowe in Justified and country singer Autumn Chase in Nashville, where she performed several songs. She also appeared in The Walking Dead, Supernatural, Orange Is the New Black and the revived Twin Peaks. More recently, she appeared in I Care a Lot and Alice before starring opposite Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage in Oz Perkins’s 2024 horror film Longlegs. Music is not a side note to Witt’s screen career. She is a singer-songwriter and pianist who trained intensively as a child and has released multiple albums and EPs, including Revisionary History, The Conduit and Witness. She also performed an original piece over the end credits of Cold Turkey and has brought her musical ability directly into roles such as Nashville and Christmas Tree Lane. Across film, television, theatre and music, Witt’s work is connected by a precise, slightly unpredictable presence—equally suited to heightened genre stories, dry comedy and emotionally complicated characters.
