Alice Krige
Alice Krige has built a career around a rare kind of screen authority: poised, intelligent and often carrying just enough mystery to make calmness feel unsettling. Born in Upington, South Africa, on 28 June 1954, she initially attended Rhodes University with plans to become a clinical psychologist. An acting class changed her direction, leading to degrees in drama and further training at London’s Central School of Speech and Drama. Krige made her professional film debut as the female lead in the 1976 South African romantic drama Vergeet My Nie. After moving to England in 1979, she appeared on British television and soon took roles in A Tale of Two Cities, Chariots of Fire and Ghost Story. Her stage work with the Royal Shakespeare Company included Cordelia in King Lear, Miranda in The Tempest and Bianca in The Taming of the Shrew, experience that helps explain the control and clarity she brings to even the strangest material. Her film and television career has moved freely between historical drama, science fiction and horror. She played Mary Shelley in Haunted Summer, appeared opposite Mickey Rourke and Faye Dunaway in Barfly, and took the lead in Stephen King and Mick Garris’s Sleepwalkers. In 1996, she found one of her defining roles as the Borg Queen in Star Trek: First Contact, winning the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress. She later returned to the character in Star Trek: Voyager, Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Picard. Krige has remained especially effective in genre stories that ask for menace without excess. She played Christabella in Silent Hill, The Witch in Gretel & Hansel and an aging film star in the psychological horror drama She Will. Elsewhere, her credits range from Institute Benjamenta and Skin to Reign of Fire, Thor: The Dark World and Netflix’s A Christmas Prince trilogy. Across stage, film and television, Krige’s career is less about one fixed screen identity than her ability to make intelligence, vulnerability and danger occupy the same frame.
