Alice Cooper

Alice Cooper arrived on screen with something most actors spend years trying to build: a fully formed character. Born Vincent Damon Furnier in Detroit on February 4, 1948, the American singer, composer and rock musician developed Alice Cooper from a band name into a stage persona shaped by horror, dark comedy and theatrical menace. Movies were part of that construction from the beginning. Cooper has cited Bette Davis’s smeared makeup in What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, Anita Pallenberg’s Great Tyrant in Barbarella and Emma Peel from The Avengers as visual inspirations. That mixture of danger, camp and self-awareness made the move into film feel natural. Even when the parts were brief, filmmakers could draw on the audience’s understanding of Alice Cooper before he said a word. His screen work has moved freely between horror and comedy. He appeared in Sextette and Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, then took the lead in the horror film Monster Dog. John Carpenter used him as a silent, menacing vagrant in Prince of Darkness, while Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare cast him as Freddy Krueger’s abusive stepfather. For many moviegoers, however, his defining film appearance is the cameo in Wayne’s World. After performing “Feed My Frankenstein,” Cooper calmly delivers a detailed backstage discussion of Milwaukee history while Wayne and Garth bow and declare themselves unworthy. The scene works because it plays the thoughtful man against the threatening stage character without diminishing either one. Cooper later appeared as himself in Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows, where the running joke hinges on Barnabas Collins assuming Alice is a woman. He also brought his taste for camp villainy to television as Herod in the 2018 production Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert. Across these roles, his screen presence remains closely tied to the persona he built in music: ominous at first glance, knowingly funny on closer inspection.
