Alfre Woodard

Alfre Woodard has built the kind of career that refuses to stay in one lane. Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, she studied drama at Boston University and made her professional theatre debut at Washington, DC’s Arena Stage in 1974. Her breakthrough came in the 1977 Off-Broadway production of For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf, followed by her film debut in Alan Rudolph’s Remember My Name. Woodard’s work moves comfortably between film, television, theatre and voice performance, often giving emotional weight to characters who might seem straightforward in lesser hands. Her supporting performance in Martin Ritt’s Cross Creek brought an Academy Award nomination, while her television career gathered momentum with an Emmy-winning arc on Hill Street Blues and her role as Dr. Roxanne Turner on St. Elsewhere. The range of her film work is striking. In John Sayles’s Passion Fish, she played Chantelle, a nurse and recovering drug addict whose relationship with a recently paralysed soap actor drives the drama; the performance earned her a Golden Globe nomination and an Independent Spirit Award. She led Spike Lee’s Crooklyn, joined the ensemble of How to Make an American Quilt and entered science fiction as Lily Sloane in Star Trek: First Contact. She later appeared in 12 Years a Slave and played the title role in Juanita. Television has offered equally substantial territory. Woodard’s performance in Miss Evers’ Boys won major honours including Emmy, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards. She also brought warmth edged with menace to Desperate Housewives, played Mariah Dillard in Luke Cage and took on the role of a US president in State of Affairs. In Clemency, Woodard led the film as a prison warden confronting the psychological cost of her work, earning a BAFTA nomination for Best Actress. Whether carrying a drama, sharpening an ensemble or lending her voice to Sarabi in The Lion King, she approaches each part with a grounded authority that has held across decades and genres.
