Alexandra Powers
Alexandra Powers is a New York City-born film and television actor whose screen work has moved comfortably between drama, genre storytelling and high-profile television productions. Raised on both coasts by divorced parents in what she described as an “artsy, liberal environment,” Powers had an early connection to the entertainment world: her mother wrote for television programs including Fantasy Island and Charlie’s Angels. By the age of six, Powers had already announced that she intended to become an actress. Her credits include the supernatural detective film Cast a Deadly Spell, the television series 21 Jump Street and Dead Poets Society. These projects placed her in sharply different worlds, from genre fiction and network television to a school drama built around young performers. In Rising Sun, she played a prostitute who attempts to seduce the character portrayed by Wesley Snipes. Powers also took on recurring television work, including a role on NBC’s legal drama L.A. Law. She played Dusty Brown in the NBC miniseries A Matter of Justice, further establishing a screen career that was not tied to one format or type of production. One of her more closely observed television assignments came with NBC’s Tonya and Nancy. After being cast, Powers called it “the role of the year” and prepared with ice-skating lessons from Dody Teachman, a former coach to Tonya Harding. Reviewing the program, The Orlando Sentinel noted Powers’ strong physical resemblance to Tonya Harding and praised her convincing performance. Across these roles, Powers built a varied body of work in film, episodic television and miniseries, taking her from ensemble dramas to parts drawn from contemporary public events.
