Alexander Held

Alexander Held built a screen career around precision, restraint and an ability to give authority figures sharply individual edges. Born in Munich on 19 October 1958, he grew up close to performance: his father, José Held, was also an actor, while Held sang as a soloist with the Regensburger Domspatzen from 1968 to 1970. Football was another early path. He played for 1860 Munich and won five youth championships before an injury prevented him from pursuing the game professionally. Held trained at Munich’s Otto Falckenberg School of the Performing Arts and joined the Munich Kammerspiele in 1980. Further stage work took him to the Staatsschauspiel Hannover, Berlin’s Volksbühne, Theater Basel and the Salzburg Festival. That substantial theatre background suited a performer known for unusually precise, sharp German delivery. His first television appearance came in a 1974 episode of the crime series Derrick, followed by his first television film role in Morlock in 1993. Held went on to appear in major historical films including Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List, Oliver Hirschbiegel’s Downfall and Marc Rothemund’s Sophie Scholl – The Last Days. Other roles included the politically tactical abbot Kuno in Margarethe von Trotta’s Vision and the Frankish Emperor Lothar I in Sönke Wortmann’s Pope Joan. Crime drama became an especially important part of Held’s later screen work. From 2010, he played head police commissioner Karl Hidde in Stralsund. Beginning in 2014, he took the lead role of head commissioner Ludwig Schaller in München Mord, creating a markedly different kind of investigator: composed, intelligent and capable of producing comedy with scarcely a change of expression. The performance earned him recognition including the Bavarian TV Award and showed what Held did particularly well—making controlled, economical acting feel richly specific.
