Aleksandr Baluev

Aleksandr Baluev is a Soviet and Russian actor whose work has moved across theatre, film and television. Born in Moscow on December 6, 1958, he took a less-than-direct route into the profession. After an unsuccessful attempt to enter the Boris Shchukin Theatre Institute, Baluev spent a year working as an assistant illuminator in Mosfilm’s lighting department. A second attempt at formal acting training brought him to the Moscow Art Theatre School, where he studied on Pavel Massalsky’s course. After completing his training in 1980, Baluev joined the Soviet Army Theatre. His early stage work included productions of Clock Without Hands and Lady of the Camellias, giving him a foundation in repertory theatre before the next turn in his career. In 1986, he moved to the Moscow Yermolova Theatre, where he played leading roles in The Second Year of Freedom, Snow Near the Prison and Caligula. Baluev left the theatre in the late 1980s, though the stage remained part of his professional life. He has since worked in enterprise productions and collaborated with the Lenkom Theatre. Alongside that theatrical career, he has established himself as a film and television actor, making his career one that cannot be neatly confined to a single medium.
