Albert Salmi

Albert Salmi was an American stage, film and television actor whose career moved from serious New York theatre to westerns, science fiction, legal drama and character-driven studio pictures. Born in Brooklyn on March 11, 1928, and raised by Finnish immigrant parents, he attended Haaren High School in Manhattan and served in the United States Army before studying method acting with Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio. Salmi first made his mark onstage. In 1955, he starred as Bo Decker in the Broadway production of Bus Stop and later toured with the play. His performance drew enough attention that he was offered the same role in the 1956 film opposite Marilyn Monroe, but he declined. At the time, Salmi preferred theatre and shared the skepticism toward film and television held by many Actors Studio alumni. The screen nevertheless became a substantial part of his working life. An early television appearance placed him opposite Paul Newman and George Peppard in the live 1956 adaptation of Bang the Drum Slowly. He later became a versatile presence across American television, appearing in three episodes of The Twilight Zone as well as Combat!, Rawhide, Daniel Boone and Gunsmoke. His performance as a killer in a 1967 Gunsmoke episode earned a Western Heritage Award. From 1974 to 1976, he co-starred as investigator Pete Ritter in the NBC legal drama Petrocelli. His film roles show the same willingness to move between genres. Salmi appeared in The Unforgiven, The Outrage, Lawman, Escape from the Planet of the Apes, Empire of the Ants, Caddyshack and Brubaker. Later parts included Greil in Dragonslayer, Geraldine Page’s husband in I’m Dancing as Fast as I Can, and the hard-drinking but loving father of Diana Lawson in Hard to Hold. Across stage and screen, Salmi’s career was shaped less by conventional leading-man polish than by the weight he could bring to difficult, forceful or weathered characters. He died in 1990, leaving behind work that stretches across several distinct eras of American acting.
