Albert Moses

Albert Moses had the kind of career that resists a tidy route. Born on 19 December 1937 in Gampola, Kandy, in British Ceylon, he first worked at the University of Ceylon in Peradeniya. Employment later took him to Africa, before he moved to London to study drama and theatre. His screen career began in India during the 1960s, where he appeared in several Bollywood films. He subsequently produced and directed his first film, Gabriella, then returned to Africa and worked on documentaries. By the early 1970s, Moses was building a career in Britain through small television roles, gradually establishing himself across film, television and the stage. His most substantial television part came as Ranjeet Singh in the ITV sitcom Mind Your Language. Moses appeared in the series from 1977 to 1979 and again in 1986, and his involvement eventually extended behind the camera when he produced 13 episodes. That progression—from supporting performer to producer—fits a career shaped by a willingness to work in different forms and on different sides of production. Theatre remained part of that varied working life. His stage appearances included Freeway at the National Theatre, Phædra Britannica with Dame Diana Rigg, and Long March to Jerusalem at Watford Theatre. These productions sat alongside a screen career that moved between television comedy and film. Moses also appeared in An American Werewolf in London in 1981. His final film, The Snarling, was released in 2018 and paid tribute to his role in that earlier movie. It was a fitting final connection for an actor whose career crossed countries, industries and formats rather than staying within one familiar lane. Moses died in 2017, leaving behind a body of work spanning Bollywood, British television, theatre, film production and documentary work.
