Albert Hall

Albert Hall is an American actor whose work across film, television and the stage has often drawn on a steady, grounded screen presence. Born and raised in Brighton, Alabama, on November 10, 1937, Hall graduated from the Columbia University School of the Arts before building a career filled with military figures, judges and men carrying real authority. His early film work included Pointer in Willie Dynamite, a part in the Leadbelly biopic and a co-pilot in The Bermuda Triangle. He also appeared in the miniseries Roots: The Next Generations, but his breakthrough came as Chief Phillips in Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now. As the Chief Petty Officer leading a Navy patrol boat upriver, Hall gives the film a practical human center amid its increasingly surreal journey. He researched the experience of the Vietnam War in preparation for the role, while some of his dialogue in Apocalypse Now Redux was reportedly semi-improvised. Hall continued moving comfortably between television and film. He appeared in the miniseries The Sophisticated Gents and landed his first regular television role in Ryan’s Four. In 1991, he worked alongside Sidney Poitier in the television movie Separate but Equal. The 1990s brought roles in Malcolm X, Rookie of the Year, Major Payne, Devil in a Blue Dress, Courage Under Fire and Beloved. Hall reunited with Malcolm X director Spike Lee for Get on the Bus. Television audiences also came to know him as Judge Seymore Walsh, a recurring character shared by The Practice and Ally McBeal; he played judges in The Young and the Restless and Days of Our Lives as well. Hall has also portrayed real people, including Hank Aaron in The Tiger Woods Story and Elijah Muhammad in Michael Mann’s Ali. His later television work included the recurring role of Bruce in Men of a Certain Age. Across these varied parts, Hall has made a career from restraint, conviction and the kind of presence that gives supporting characters genuine weight.
