Alan Tilvern

Alan Tilvern’s route to the screen began a long way from the usual show-business path. Born in Whitechapel on 5 November 1918, he left school and worked as a barrow boy in Brick Lane. During the Second World War, he served in the Army, but was invalided out before the war ended in 1945. A year later, he began an acting career that would continue until the late 1980s. Tilvern worked across film and television, while screenwriting also formed part of his professional life. That range matters when looking at the shape of his career: rather than being tied to one corner of the industry, he remained active across different forms of screen work for more than four decades. Danger by My Side stands as one example from that long run. For many viewers, however, Tilvern is most readily associated with his final film. He played R. Maroon in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, the role that brought his career to a close in the late 1980s. It is a distinctive endpoint: after beginning his working life on the streets of Brick Lane and passing through wartime Army service, Tilvern finished his screen career in one of the period’s most recognisable film productions.
