Alan Ruck

Alan Ruck has spent his career finding the tension, insecurity and humor inside characters who could easily have been played as straightforward supporting parts. Born in Cleveland on July 1, 1956, he graduated from the University of Illinois with a B.F.A. and worked on stages around the United States, including Chicago’s Wisdom Bridge Theatre. In 1985, he made his Broadway debut in Neil Simon’s Biloxi Blues alongside Matthew Broderick. Ruck had already entered the movies by then, making his film debut as Carl Brennan in the 1983 drama Bad Boys and appearing the same year as Roger Jackson in Class. His defining early screen role came in John Hughes’ Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. As Cameron Frye, Ferris’s anxious, hypochondriac best friend, Ruck gave the comedy its troubled emotional center. Broderick encouraged him to audition, and their existing friendship was reportedly a factor in his casting. That role could have fixed Ruck in one particular register, but his film work soon moved across genres. He played Hendry William French in Young Guns II, Captain Jonathan Harriman of the Enterprise-B in Star Trek Generations, an irritating tourist trapped aboard the bus in Speed and eccentric storm chaser Robert “Rabbit” Nurick in Twister. Later films included Ghost Town, The Happening, I Love You, Beth Cooper and Extraordinary Measures. Television gave Ruck room to develop a different kind of comic rhythm. From 1996 to 2002, he played Stuart Bondek on Spin City, first alongside Michael J. Fox and later Charlie Sheen. His many television appearances also included From the Earth to the Moon, Scrubs, Justified, Bunheads, The Exorcist and Persons Unknown. From 2018 to 2023, Ruck played Connor Roy, the eldest son of a media magnate, on HBO’s Succession. The performance brought him Golden Globe and Emmy nominations in 2023, while the cast won Screen Actors Guild Awards for ensemble performance in 2022 and 2024. It was a fitting late-career showcase for an actor long skilled at making discomfort, self-importance and vulnerability occupy the same frame.
