Alan Ford

Alan Ford has the kind of screen presence that can establish a character before the conversation has properly started. Across film and television, his firm delivery and imposing manner have repeatedly made him a natural fit for crime bosses, promoters and East End operators. Just as importantly, he has shown a dry comic instinct that lets him play with that hard-edged image. Born in Camberwell, South London, on 23 February 1938, Ford grew up in Elephant and Castle. He left school at 15, worked various jobs and completed two years of national service in the Royal Army Ordnance Corps. His acting career has included extensive stage work, with appearances at the National Theatre, Royal Court Theatre and Theatre Royal Stratford East, as well as numerous repertory theatres. On screen, Ford had a small speaking role in The Long Good Friday and appeared as a taxi driver in An American Werewolf in London. He later became closely associated with Guy Ritchie’s early crime films, narrating and appearing in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels before playing crime boss Brick Top in Snatch. The latter role made particularly effective use of Ford’s ability to sound measured and threatening at the same time. His career has never been confined to straight crime drama. Ford played boxing promoter Terry Norton in Knowing Me, Knowing You with Alan Partridge, appeared as the East End Thug in The Armando Iannucci Shows and played a priest throughout Snuff Box. He also portrayed former band manager Big Basil Steel in Brian Pern: 45 Years of Prog & Roll. Other work has ranged from Exorcist: The Beginning and psychological thriller Winter Ridge to a guest role as Uncle Terry in Lilyhammer. His voice work includes Roosta in the original radio version of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Goliath in the British version of JoJo’s Circus. In 2023, Ford was announced as Stevie Mitchell, Billy Mitchell’s father, in EastEnders—a role well suited to an actor whose career has long drawn on a distinctly London presence.
