Al Sharpton

Al Sharpton’s screen presence is inseparable from the voice he developed through ministry, broadcasting and civil rights advocacy. Born in the Brownsville neighborhood of Brooklyn on October 3, 1954, Sharpton entered public life unusually early: he preached his first sermon at four and toured with gospel singer Mahalia Jackson. As a teenager, Sharpton was mentored by the Rev. Jesse Jackson and the Rev. Calvin Morris, figures he later credited with starting his activism. Jackson appointed him youth director of the Brooklyn branch of Operation Breadbasket, the economic arm of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. In 1972, Sharpton also became youth director for Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm’s presidential campaign. Sharpton graduated from Samuel J. Tilden High School in Brooklyn and attended Brooklyn College for two years, leaving in 1975. His subsequent career has crossed several kinds of public platform. He has worked as a Baptist minister, activist, civil rights advocate, human rights defender, radio personality, talk show host and television presenter, alongside his appearances as a film actor. That background gives Sharpton a different profile from performers who came up through a conventional acting route. His on-screen identity is grounded in public speaking and the direct, practiced delivery of someone accustomed to addressing congregations, audiences and political gatherings. Rather than separating performance from his wider career, his screen work sits within a life built around communication and public engagement.
