Al Roker

Al Roker’s screen career has never fit neatly into one category. Born in Queens on August 20, 1954, he initially wanted to become a cartoonist before building a wide-ranging career as a weather presenter, journalist, television personality, writer and actor. His work has also included film, television and voice acting, all part of a public life shaped by an easy command of the camera. Roker began working as a weather anchor at Syracuse station WHEN-TV while attending SUNY Oswego, where he also DJ’d at campus radio station WNYO. After a period at WTTG in Washington, D.C., he joined NBC-owned WKYC in Cleveland in 1978. Five years later, he returned to New York and WNBC-TV, eventually becoming the station’s regular weeknight weathercaster. His defining television chapter began with appearances across NBC’s morning programming. After serving as a substitute on Today and becoming the forecaster for Weekend Today, Roker took over the regular weekday weather position in January 1996. His remote forecasts and conversations with visitors outside the studio became a fixture of the show, while his responsibilities expanded to interviews, reported segments and co-hosting duties. He later co-hosted Today’s Take and returned as a co-host of 3rd Hour Today. That long television run explains much of Roker’s appeal as a performer. He is comfortable working live, responding to the moment and moving between information and entertainment without making the shift feel forced. His 2005 report from inside Hurricane Wilma showed the more hazardous side of weather coverage, while his multi-part Rokerthon projects turned endurance forecasting into fundraising and record-setting television. Although Please Rewind does not yet have a connected movie featuring Roker, his film, television and voice-acting work belongs to a broader career built on versatility. Whether presenting the forecast, conducting an interview or stepping into a performance, he brings the instincts of someone who has spent decades understanding how television works in real time.
