Al Cliver

Al Cliver is an Italian film actor whose career became closely associated with the adventurous, unsettling edges of European genre cinema. Born Pierluigi Conti to Italian parents in Alexandria, Egypt, on July 16, 1951, he entered the business young, working as an actor and model in television commercials from the age of 16. His first film appearance came two years later with an uncredited bit part in Luchino Visconti’s The Damned (1969). Cliver played a Brownshirt during the Night of the Long Knives sequence—a small beginning in a film by one of Italy’s major directors. Like a number of Italian performers of the period, he adopted an American-sounding stage name, becoming Al Cliver. Cliver received his first starring role in the 1974 romantic drama The Profiteer. The performance brought him a Nastro d’Argento nomination for Best New Actor and suggested a path beyond the brief appearances with which he had started. His subsequent career moved through erotic dramas, adventure films and crime movies, but horror and exploitation cinema provided many of his best-known roles. He became a recurring presence in the films of Lucio Fulci, appearing in Zombi 2, The Black Cat, The Beyond and Demonia. That run placed him inside some of Fulci’s most feverish genre worlds, where a steady screen presence could be especially effective amid the violence, dread and surreal imagery. Cliver also worked with Jesús Franco on Mondo Cannibale and Devil Hunter, further establishing his connection to European exploitation filmmaking. Taken together, these films give Cliver’s career a distinctive shape: an early brush with prestige cinema, a notable romantic-drama lead, and a lasting place in the rougher, stranger territory of Italian and European genre movies.
