Aida Turturro

Aida Turturro has built a career out of characters who do not simply enter a scene—they change its temperature. Born in New York City on September 25, 1962, and raised on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, she attended SUNY New Paltz while paying her tuition by cleaning houses. Turturro made her film debut as Grace in the 1989 comedy True Love. Small roles in What About Bob? and Jersey Girl followed before she made her Broadway debut as Eunice Hubbell in the 1992 revival of A Streetcar Named Desire, starring Jessica Lange and Alec Baldwin. That mix of film, television and stage work would become a defining feature of her career. Her breakthrough came as Janice Soprano in The Sopranos. Appearing in 72 episodes across the show’s six seasons from 2000 to 2007, Turturro made Janice a major presence in a series crowded with volatile personalities. The performance earned her two Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, in 2001 and 2007. After The Sopranos, Turturro made her Broadway musical debut as prison matron Mama Morton in Chicago. She also continued to move easily through television, appearing in Medium, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Nurse Jackie, where she reunited with Edie Falco as lawyer Laura Vargas. Her later work included Judge Felicia Catano on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Maura Figgis—the sister of gangster Jimmy “The Butcher” Figgis—on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and a 2017 appearance in Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders. Across comedy, drama and procedural television, Turturro’s strength lies in making supporting characters feel fully present. Whether playing a difficult relative, an authority figure or someone operating close to the criminal world, she brings directness and personality without sanding down the character’s rough edges.
